Please help Starehe Girls’ Centre raise $50,000 to support the sponsorship of 25 financially disadvantaged adolescent girls in Kenya for two years.

The Problem

Millions of girls and young women miss out on school even though studies show that educating girls has huge benefits for the health, prosperity and security of communities and countries. Through this project, Starehe will help girls overcome the barriers they face in accessing an education and pursuing their dreams.

About the Starehe Centre

The Starehe Girls’ Centre is a boarding school in Kenya that provides free quality secondary education for exceptionally gifted adolescent girls  who come from disadvantaged communities across all 47 counties in Kenya.

Starehe provides a safe space for girls to live and learn, including for those who are unable to afford the travel back home for school breaks and holidays. Starehe also empowers girls through critical life skills so that they are able to achieve their dreams and ambitions.

Starehe provides food, clothing and health services to make sure that girls have the wrap-around support they need to succeed in completing their education. There are a number of clubs focused on topics such as debate, drama, renewable energy and climate, journalism and math to help girls explore various careers and skills as they think about their post-secondary plans.

For the past 13 years, a total of 1,315 students have successfully gone through the Centre, and the student population has grown from 72 in 2005 to 720 in 2021. Most notably, 95% of Starehe graduates have been admitted to university . Some graduates have gone on to attend Ivy League institutions in the US, speak before the United Nations, and serve as advocates for other girls in their communities.

 Starehe is the Solution

Starehe’s project will support the full tuition, room and board, and associated costs for 25 girls who attend Starehe. Through the provision of a free, high quality secondary education, Starehe is contributing to the solution by ensuring that girls have the education and skills they need to lead and pursue their dreams. Starehe is providing a conducive learning environment and a safe space to nurture their dreams. a
