We at Capital City Church just didn't know. We didn't know so many children across the DC Metro were hungry. The Capital Are Food Bank reports 200,000 children in our area are at risk of or actually experiencing hunger.
The need is overwhelming and paralyzing. We weren't sure what we could do...
And then we met the Stanton Elementary School community. Stanton is located right off Naylor Road in the Anacostia area of DC. At Stanton, 620 children (100% of the students) qualify for free or reduced meals at school. This means ALL 620 children go home to situations where they may not know where their next meal will come from. That's bad enough overnight. But, can you even imagine how long the weekend would seem if your next meal after Friday lunch wasn't until Monday breakfast? To make the situation worse, 1 in 5 of these students are also homeless. I'm weeping as I write this. We are heart-broken.
Maybe we can't solve the problem of hunger all across the DC Metro Area. But, certainly, we can do something with these children, with the children in our own backyard at Stanton.
That's when we met Blessing in a Backpack. BIAB began September 2013 feeding 47 students at Stanton. Each week of the school year, backpacks are filled with food for delivery to the school on Friday, where parent volunteers distribute the individual backpacks to students who are part of the program.
This fall, with the help of Capital City Church's Be The Love Campaign, BIAB will be able to send backpacks home with 160 students at Stanton throughout the school year!
You can do the math, though...that still leaves way too many children (460) going home without. What if we could do better? What if we could meet even half of the need this school year, sending 310 students home with backpacks?
That's where this campaign begins. We want to reach out to our friends, co-workers, and neighbors in the DC Metro Area. Will you help us make a difference in the lives of these children at Stanton Elementary? If we can raise $25,000 early in the school year, that will meet half of the need at Stanton, allowing BIAB to take care of the most desperate situations.
But we must act quickly. The school year is starting right now, and we need to know how many children to commit to. We can do this together. Will you help us today? There is so much need, but this is something we can do, and with everyone doing something, we can certainly make a difference at Stanton!
Oh...and when we've reached our $25,000 target, we're going to have a celebration with the families of Stanton. You're all invited. Stay tuned for details for a Family Fun Day in October to celebrate all we've accomplished.
