If you’ve ever had the privilege of meeting Whitney Knowlton, you know she is unstoppable.

Eighteen years ago, she made a decision that would change not only her home state—and far beyond it—but the fate of thousands of animals who needed someone brave enough to stand for them. After discovering a site called Dogs in Danger, Whitney realized a painful truth: while Hilton Head enjoyed a well-resourced humane society, healthy and adoptable dogs elsewhere were dying in staggering numbers and often in heartbreaking ways.

At the time, Whitney was thriving in Southampton, NY—an accomplished interior designer with her own furniture store—but she couldn’t look away. She formalized her rescue work, pushed fiercely for reform, and built a mission grounded in compassion, grit, and the unwavering belief that every life matters.

To carry that mission forward, Whitney founded Last Chance Animal Rescue in 2008, building one of the most impactful foster-based rescue networks in the region. And in 2013, she established St Francis Farm, creating a sanctuary that offers lifelong care and refuge for animals placed through her adoption program—an extraordinary commitment to ensuring that every animal entrusted to her rescue would be safe for life.

Because she dared to act, more than 17,000 animals have found safety, dignity, and families of their own. Because she led, countless others followed—some even establishing rescues of their own. Whitney’s impact isn’t linear; it is exponential, continuing to ripple outward in ways that can never be fully measured.

Today, it is our turn.

Earlier this summer, after experiencing significant pain and undergoing further testing, Whitney received the devastating diagnosis of stage IV cancer. Following surgery, the reality has settled painfully into place: the rescuer, the advocate, the tireless voice for the voiceless now needs us to rally for her.

Medical expenses have already been considerable—many of them out of pocket.

And while Whitney is strong, she is not someone who seeks attention. Private, humble, generous beyond measure, she has spent nearly two decades lifting everyone around her—two- and four-legged alike—higher than they could have stood alone.
