Stand Together with Roxana

Roxana came to the United States last year with her 5 year old son from El Salvador, running away from the rampant violence.  She has been wearing a GPS ankle monitor for over a year now.  When she first got detained, she was in North Carolina and she did not have good representation for her asylum case and lost.  Now she is living here in the Bay Area, and hoping to reopen her asylum petition so she and her son do not have to return to the dangerous situation in El Salvador.
Roxana had a check in on Monday May 8th, and was thankfully told that her next check in would not be until November.

In course of accompanying Roxana to the check in, however, we learned more about her story, and challenges that her family is facing. Roxana's husband, Martin, has been out of work for more than 3 months already because of an injury to his knee. It requires surgery and will take 6 more months to heal. Roxana has not been able to find work on account of her ankle monitor, and the family, along with their 5 year old son, was evicted from their apartment. They are now living in the garage of an uncle.

The full cost for the attorney is $6,000, and we just learned that Roxana and Martin, knowing that Roxana needed the lawyer, took out a Pay Day loan with very high interest to put down the initial payment, but have no way to pay the loan or the rapidly increasing interest.
Roxana and Martin expressed deep gratitude to those who have already donated more than $1,412 to help them, and asked how they could begin to return the favor. We told them that helping us learn how to accompany families like theirs and expand our capacity is a gift. They said they would be very willing to come share their story at any congregations or organizations that might be open to raising funds on their behalf. Roxana is also seeking opportunities to support her family by providing childcare, doing housecleaning, or cooking for events as they figure out how to get back on their feet.

You can donate or encourage others to donate at https://www.gofundme.com/standwithroxana, and be in touch through [email redacted] with other ways your community might want to support Roxana and her family.

With gratitude,
