StandUp Straight for Alesya

Donation protected
On Wednesday March 11th, Alesya has been scheduled for a life altering surgery for which we hope will improve her quality of life.  At 13, she is smart, beautiful, and talented and she should be dreaming teenage dreams, not wrestling with a curve in her spine that is threatening her life.

She was diagnosed 4 years ago with dextro-scoliosis (a severe curvature of the spine).   She and her family have put up a tremendous fight against this debilitating and soon to be life threatening disease.  Every 3 months, they have been visiting Orthopedic doctors in the Cleveland clinic and the Riley Children’s hospital; for the past 4 years, she has been wearing hard brace, for 22 hours a day.  Not what you would hope for your teenage daughter.

Despite years of intensive physical therapy and an exercise regimen at the Michigan Scolismart, acupuncture, and Chiropractor they have not helped her, and her spinal curve angle has increased to a dangerous level necessitating the need for intervention surgery.  Left untreated, it could affect her lung & heart functions leading to paralysis and death.

The traditional surgery with metal rods and screws has a long list of life-long complications, paralysis and death.  The family has found a non-traditional and less invasive ASC (Anterior Scoliosis Correction with Titanium screws and rope that will help her grow) surgery by Baron Lonner, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and attending Spine Surgeon at Mount Sinai Medical Center, NYC. While, the hospital is in-network, the doctor is out of network. The total surgeon fee alone will be $54,000, with the first $29,500 paid 2 weeks before the surgery, and the rest to be paid $2,400 per month after the surgery.  Mount Sinai Hospital is in network, and hope to get appropriate reimbursements we are entitled to.  The family is working through the steps with insurance, but the surgery date is next week on Wednesday, March 11th.

When I heard this news, and ask for help from a colleague, I offered to start a GoFundMe page. I had a best friend who battled a similar challenge at about the same age and I saw her struggles.  I also battle with mild scoliosis to this day - and can only imagine Alesya's pain, fears and reduced quality of life.  I have worked hard to regain my ability to stand up straight and it is my hope that for everyone who reads this message that they will value that simple elegance of our body's design:  The ability for our bones and muscles to operate at they were designed, in perfect alignment with one another.

In appreciation of your own body's functioning, and for some, who experience excellent human performance - might you contribute something towards helping to Raise up the Rathinasamy Family?
