Hello friends and family,
Many of you have reached out asking how you can help and support us during this time. First and foremost, we want to say thank you for the outpouring of love, prayers, and encouragement we have already received—it has meant more than words can express.
For those who may not know, Tommy Martinez has been battling a devastating disease called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). PSP is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disorder similar to Parkinson’s disease but progresses like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). After years of symptoms and multiple misdiagnoses, Tommy was finally diagnosed in 2023, though the disease had been affecting him long before that.
On January 25, 2026, Tommy was transported by ambulance to the hospital due to aspiration pneumonia. Unfortunately, this is a common and serious complication of PSP and is the leading cause of death associated with the disease. Swallowing difficulties caused by weakened, slow, and uncoordinated throat muscles prevent the airway from closing properly, allowing food or liquid to enter the lungs and cause infection. Due to the severity of his condition, Tommy is currently intubated, sedated, and on a ventilator. Moving forward, he will require both a tracheostomy and a G-tube to help sustain his life.
During this incredibly difficult time, Janice is doing everything possible to ensure Tommy is comfortable, cared for, and at peace. As a family, we have created a GoFundMe to help support Janice with what lies ahead—time away from work to be by Tommy’s side, medical equipment and supplies not fully covered by insurance, and everyday necessities such as food, gas for hospital and rehab visits, and self-care so she can continue to remain strong as his primary caregiver.
Tommy and Janice have spent their lives giving back, supporting countless young athletes and members of their community. Now, we hope to surround them with the same love and support they have so freely given to others.
We ask for continued prayers for Tommy, Janice, and the entire Martinez family, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for standing with us during this time.
