We are reaching out to friends, colleagues, and the broader community to support Dr. Shyam Mohan Dang and Dr. Saumya Kumar and their family following a devastating accident while traveling in Costa Rica.

Shyam, a beloved gastroenterologist, and Saumya, a dedicated endocrinologist in Portland, were traveling with their two sons and Shyam’s mother when they were involved in a serious motor vehicle accident. Tragically, Shyam’s mother lost her life.

Both Shyam and one of their sons sustained fractures and remain hospitalized, requiring surgical care. Saumya suffered a traumatic brain injury with subarachnoid hemorrhage and continues to receive critical care in the ICU. This sudden and heartbreaking loss, coupled with the severity of their injuries, has profoundly altered their family’s life in an instant.

Shyam and Saumya are deeply respected physicians who have devoted their lives to caring for others. They completed their gastroenterology and endocrinology fellowships, respectively, in Little Rock, Arkansas, where many of their lifelong friendships and professional bonds were formed. In Portland and beyond, they are known not only for their clinical excellence but also for their kindness, humility, and unwavering support for patients, colleagues, trainees, and friends.

In addition to the overwhelming emotional toll, the family is now facing substantial and unforeseen financial challenges related to international hospitalization, intensive care, and eventual medical evacuation back to the United States. Despite having excellent health insurance, many critical expenses — including air medical transport, foreign hospital and ICU bills, travel and lodging for family members, and extended recovery needs — are not fully covered.

This fundraiser is being organized by close friends and colleagues to help ease the immense financial burden during this incredibly difficult time. Funds raised will be used to assist with:

• Medical evacuation and transport when safe and medically appropriate

• International hospital and ICU-related expenses

• Travel, lodging, and family support needs

• Recovery, rehabilitation, and ongoing care in the weeks and months ahead

Shyam and Saumya have spent their careers caring for others with compassion and dedication. We hope that, in this moment of profound need, they and their family can feel surrounded by the same care, strength, and generosity they have always extended to others.
