Standing with Stephen in His Fight Against Leukemia

Donation protected
We are reaching out today to ask for your urgent help and support for a truly dedicated American hero, SMSgt Stephen Metcalf, a retired, disabled veteran facing the fight of his life against an extremely aggressive form of blood cancer.

A Sudden, Devastating Diagnosis

Stephen dedicated his life to service, wearing the USAF uniform for over 32 years and contributing an incredible 40 years of civil service time. Now, at a time when he deserves peace and rest, he has been blindsided by a devastating medical crisis.

On Monday, November 24th, Stephen went to the Emergency Room in Syracuse for severe shortness of breath. Initial tests were thankfully clear—his heart was healthy, and there were no clots or strokes. However, the blood tests from Hematology delivered a shocking and life-altering diagnosis: Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

This is a severe and rapidly progressing cancer that requires immediate, intensive attention. The doctors in Syracuse quickly conferred with specialists at the Wilmot Cancer Center in Rochester, who confirmed the grim prognosis: Stephen is facing long-term, intensive care culminating in a Bone Marrow Transplant.

The Road Ahead: Astronomical Costs

While Stephen’s veteran status and disability provide some coverage, the out-of-pocket costs for a cancer battle of this magnitude are astronomical. A bone marrow transplant and the months of surrounding treatment are some of the most expensive medical procedures, with costs easily running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Our goal of $35,000 will directly help Stephen and his family manage the crushing financial burden, which includes:

Medical Co-Pays and Deductibles: Covering the non-covered portions of chemotherapy, hospital stays, and the eventual bone marrow transplant.

Life-Saving Medications: Paying for prescription drugs and supportive care medications not fully covered by insurance.

Exorbitant Commuting Costs: Stephen's treatment is at Wilmot Cancer Center in Rochester, while his family home is in Syracuse. His devoted family is commuting daily to be by his side, incurring significant and immediate costs for gas, tolls, and parking. These travel expenses will continue for months throughout his long recovery.

Caregiver Support: Easing the financial strain so his family can focus on providing the critical emotional and physical support he needs without the added stress of crushing bills.
