Last night, a devastating fire destroyed Spock’s Sanctuary, a reptile and amphibian rescue, zoo, and adoption center in Des Moines, Iowa, run with love and dedication by Cole and Cam. This sanctuary wasn’t just a place—it was a safe haven for animals that had nowhere else to go, a place for people to learn, and a bridge connecting these incredible creatures with caring homes.
In the aftermath of the fire, 146 animals were rescued, but heartbreakingly, 22 were lost. Every single one of these animals was deeply cared for and loved. Cole, Cam, their staff, and volunteers have poured their hearts, time, and resources into giving these animals a second chance at life.
Their impact reaches far beyond their sanctuary. During the floods in Spencer, Iowa in 2024, Cole and Cam stepped up to deliver reptile food to pet owners in Spencer and throughout Northwest Iowa when it was needed most. Over the years, they have also brought ambassador animals to Northwest Iowa libraries, creating educational programs for kids and helping foster understanding and appreciation for these often misunderstood species.
In the wake of this tragedy, the community has stepped up in incredible ways. The animals were first helped out with the help of Des Moines Fire Department along with being cared for and temporarily housed with the help of the Animal Rescue League. Many have since been placed with trusted rescue organizations including Snakes Alive, Big and Small Tortoise Rescue and Sanctuary, Wild Thunder Wildlife Rescue and Sanctuary, as well as dedicated volunteers and supporters who offered their homes to help. It truly has taken a village.
As a nonprofit, all veterinary care, recovery efforts, and rebuilding costs fall directly on the sanctuary. The road ahead will be long, but their commitment to these animals has never wavered. Spock’s Sanctuary was never just a place—it was a promise. A promise that every animal that came through their doors would be safe, cared for, and valued.
Cole and Cam are the kind of people who would never ask for help, but they so greatly deserve it along with the animals and the mission they have dedicated themselves to. They have given everything to these animals, always putting them first, no matter what.
Any support—whether it’s a donation or simply sharing this fundraiser—means more than words can express. Help us stand behind Cole, Cam, and everyone working beside them as they recover, rebuild, and continue saving the animals who depend on them.
Thank you for your kindness and support during this incredibly difficult time.
