Sophia Olaf’s Journey — Fighting ROHHAD with Courage and Hope
Meet Sophia Olaf, a remarkable, joyful, and courageous 4-year-old girl whose strength has already inspired everyone who knows her. Over the past year and a half, Sophia has faced a series of unexpected and life-changing medical challenges—and her journey is far from over.
At just 2½ years old, Sophia—who had always been healthy and petite—began showing signs of rapid-onset obesity. Less than a year later, she was diagnosed with a rare hormonal disorder called Diabetes Insipidus, which causes excessive urination and extreme thirst due to a deficiency of the antidiuretic hormone, vasopressin.
On the night before her 4th birthday, Sophia suffered a seizure at home and was rushed to Oishei Children’s Hospital, where she spent eight days in the ICU. Doctors discovered that her sodium levels were critically low and that she was hypo-ventilating during sleep. As a result, Sophia now requires a BiPAP machine each night to help her breathe safely while she sleeps.
During her stay, Sophia underwent extensive testing—genetic screenings, sleep studies, and cardiac evaluations. Based on these results, her care team believes Sophia has been affected by ROHHAD syndrome (Rapid-Onset Obesity with Hypothalamic Dysfunction, Hypoventilation, and Autonomic Dysregulation)—an extremely rare and lifelong condition that affects only about 200 children worldwide.
Currently, only a handful of hospitals in the U.S. specialize in ROHHAD research and treatment. Sophia’s doctors in Buffalo have determined that she needs to travel to either Boston Children’s Hospital or Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, both of which have expertise in managing this complex disorder.
Sophia will require lifelong supportive care, including breathing support, medications, regular lab work, imaging, and consultations with multiple specialists. Her parents, Kelly and Joe, are devoted and loving caregivers to Sophia and her 1½-year-old twin siblings, Joey and Gianna. The Olaf family will soon be traveling out of state and out of network to ensure Sophia receives the specialized care she deserves.
Your donation will help cover travel expenses, medical costs, lodging, and ongoing care needs as the family navigates this difficult journey. Every contribution—no matter the size—makes a meaningful difference in Sophia’s life and future. Her parents are handling all of the funds.
The Olaf family is deeply grateful for your continued prayers, love, and support for their brave and extraordinary little girl. Together, we can help Sophia continue her fight with hope, courage, and the best medical care possible.
