Life changed in an instant for Skylar on January 26th, 2026. After experiencing sudden weakness, blurred vision, and profuse vomiting, he realized this wasn't a normal flu bug he caught this winter; it was a brain bleed. After being rushed from hospital to hospital they determined he had an AVM (arteriovenous malformation). This is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels he was born with and unaware of, until that day. AVM's lead to blood flow issues that cut off oxygen to parts of the body and cause what Skylar experienced.
While his condition has slowly improved, he is nowhere near out of the woods. After a few weeks in the intensive care unit, they determined he will need a craniotomy to remove the AVM. If they choose to not perform the surgery, future strokes, paralysis and even death are on the table.
The overwhelming support Skylar and his fiance Angie have received will never be forgotten: from the hospital visits, phone calls, digital messages, prayers, etc. However, there is a long road ahead of uncertainty and financial stress that will be a burden not to be shouldered alone.
Here is what lies ahead for Skylar and his family:
1) Extensive medical bills from transports, ICU stays, surgeries, and prolonged therapy
2) lost wages from being unable to work during and shortly after recovery (2-6months+)
3) uncertainty, mental and physical pain, and healing if all goes as planned
