Nine months ago, Sam’s life changed in a matter of seconds…

While walking to school, Sam was attacked by a magpie. The bird struck her directly in the eye, causing devastating injuries that extended deep into the eye and retina.

Sam is a beautiful young girl who should be worrying about school, friends and growing up. Instead, she has spent the past nine months travelling to hospital appointments, undergoing treatment and facing an uncertain future with her sight.

Today, Sam has no vision at all.

Her family now faces the next and incredibly difficult stage of her recovery: multiple surgeries over the coming months, in the hope of restoring some of her sight.

For Sam and her family, this isn’t a quick recovery. It is a long road.

The hospital is approximately 2½ hours from home, meaning every appointment brings the additional costs of fuel, travel, parking, medication and everything else that comes with supporting a child through ongoing medical treatment.

Sam’s mum, Nicole, is a single mum doing everything she can to keep her family going while also being there for Sam through this incredibly difficult time. She continues to work and juggle the responsibilities of raising her children, but the financial pressure of this situation is becoming overwhelming.
