Hi everyone — my name is Becky, and I’m creating this fundraiser for my mom and stepdad during one of the hardest seasons our family has ever faced.
Our Papa Art is currently in the hospital in Sacramento with end-stage heart failure. We’re praying he will qualify for an LVAD device, and right now he’s going through extensive testing to see if this life-saving treatment is possible. If approved, he’ll remain hospitalized for several months, followed by a long recovery at home where he’ll need full-time support.
The hospital is nearly two hours from where we live, which has made everything more complicated. On top of that, my parents’ car can’t pass smog right now, so it can’t be registered or legally driven. Transportation has become a major challenge. I’m currently the main source of rides to and from Sacramento, and I’ll also be helping care for him once he’s home.
Finances were already tight before this. Art hasn’t been able to work since December. My mom is taking leave through FMLA to be by his side as much as possible, but her time off is unpaid and she has used all of her sick and vacation hours. I also work a second job about 24 hours a week, but it’s per diem, so any time I miss to help my family is unpaid, which is also a financial stressor.
The long stretches in the hospital have been incredibly hard on Art emotionally. Being away from home and family for so long is taking a toll, and he’s starting to feel depressed when he has to go days without visitors. Being able to spend more time with him would mean everything as he waits for surgery and works toward recovery.
Funds raised will help ease the financial pressure so our family can focus on being present and supporting Art through this fight.
Our goal is to raise $20,000 to help cover lost income, travel and lodging near the hospital, car repairs and transportation needs, and essential household expenses in the months ahead. If we are blessed to receive more than we need for those basics, the remaining funds will go directly toward Art’s medical treatments, medications, and the many costs that come with long-term recovery.
