Standing with Mum: A chance for recovery

Donation protected

Hi, my name is Issy and I’m fundraising for my wonderful mum - Becky.

Last year Becky developed a cough which progressively got worse and in the end became quite painful, she of course visited her local doctor and upon assessment in March 25 she was then referred for relevant tests and scans. Results were returned to her in April 25 confirming a diagnosis of stage 3 lung cancer with an urgency to obtain a sample and biopsy in order to offer an immediate treatment plan. Little did we know this was the beginning of a very long road ahead…

For context, Becky has lived in Tenerife for almost ten years with her beautiful little dogs. She has made a wonderful life and great reputation for herself in the fantastic work she has done. Running an upbeat and friendly bar in the heart of Los Gigantes, Puerto de Santiago, where many of you will know her from - Sunset bar. Not to mention the amazing charity work she does and overall being an amazing friend and pillar to the community there.

Of course Becky has remained in her home in Tenerife, whilst undergoing multiple medical tests. Eagerly trying to obtain a viable sample for an accurate biopsy. However, we still do not have an answer as to what specific cancer cell resides within her lung and therefore are unable to start a course of treatment, if one could be offered.

Seven biopsies and one surgery (Mediastinoscopy) later, the medical care team in Tenerife are at a complete loss and have reached the end of their capabilities in being able to provide an answer or treatment plan. You may be wondering why a surgery to remove the tumour from the lung hasn’t been offered and that is because Doctors have deemed the tumour inoperable, as it is too dangerous and will not only cause enormous implications but of course in the very worst case, loss of Becky’s life.

Becky’s sister kindly arranged a call with an extremely highly respected oncologist in London who had the opportunity to review all of Becky’s medical notes and in turn explained to us, that in simpler terms the tumour Becky has is extremely rare and difficult to diagnose. Not only that but due to its extremely aggressive form, by nature it is surrounded by something called necrosis which is a widespread death of cancer cells. This is what has made all of the biopsies thus far void.

The oncologist spoke highly of a medical biopsy called an Endobronchial ultrasound
(EBUS) and is adamant that with the support of her amazing team and robotic equipment she will obtain a viable sample for biopsy and be able to offer Becky a healthy future.

The estimated cost of this medical procedure is £12,000, not to mention living costs whilst she is out of work and additional travel fees in trying to arrange her safely travelling back to the UK. This is money that we do not have and are desperately trying to raise as Becky’s health is deteriorating rapidly.

I ask you from the bottom of my heart, please donate. Please help to save my Mums life. This is now the only hope we have. No gesture is too small and we thank you as a family for any support offered.

Thank you, Issy x
