Our home has always had an open-door policy. Everyone who walked through our doors was welcomed, loved, fed, and treated like family. That’s just who my mom was, and so many people have always looked at her as a second mom.
For the past 10 years, my mom fought polymyositis, a rare autoimmune disease that caused her body to attack its own muscles. It made everyday things like walking, standing, bathing, dressing, and getting around incredibly difficult. Over the last two years especially, her health continued to decline. She needed more help with everyday activities, more medical care, and more support from our family. She was also diagnosed with congestive heart failure, COPD, and, in May 2026, squamous cell carcinoma. Even while she was alive, our family was doing everything we could to keep up with her growing medical needs. She had multiple doctors’ appointments, hospitalizations, medications, wound care, and medical supplies, all while we were trying to keep up with our normal household expenses and mortgage. We never imagined how quickly everything would change. Since August 11th, everything changed. My mom spent much of the past several weeks in the hospital, fighting through one complication after another. Despite everything she went through and every effort to help her, she ultimately passed away after battling several serious illnesses and infections. Losing her has left a hole in our family that can never be filled.
Now, we are left trying to navigate life without her while also facing the overwhelming costs that came with her illness, hospitalizations, medical care, and other expenses. My dad is now facing medical bills, household expenses, and mortgage debt that have built up during this difficult time. We are doing everything we can, but we are also facing the possibility of losing our home.
My mom loved the beach, gardening, and simply being surrounded by her family. More than anything, we wish we could have had more time with her and given her the chance to enjoy the little things she loved. If you are able to donate, share our GoFundMe, or simply keep my dad and our family in your thoughts and prayers, we would be incredibly grateful. Every donation, share, and kind message means more to us than you know.
