Standing with Mayra: Cancer and New Motherhood

I am writing to you today on behalf of my dear friend and nursing classmate, Mayra. We met in middle school and have been friends since. Last year, we both got into the Cabrillo Nursing Program, where Mayra’s dedication and compassion were evident to everyone who worked alongside her. She was on a path to becoming a healer, but life recently took an unexpected and challenging turn.

During our 3rd semester, while navigating the rigors of nursing school, Mayra was also preparing for the joy of her first pregnancy. However, due to the physical demands of the program and her health, she had to make the incredibly difficult decision to step away from her studies. During her third trimester, what should have been a time of pure anticipation turned into a period of fear: an ultrasound revealed a tumor.

Shortly after the birth of her beautiful daughter, Mayra received a diagnosis that no new mother should ever have to face. A biopsy confirmed she has a rare form of ovarian cancer known as dysgerminoma.

Instead of focusing solely on her newborn, Mayra’s days are now filled with PET scans, MRIs, CT scans, and constant blood work. The road ahead remains uncertain; she must undergo testing every three months to monitor the cancer, and there is a possibility that she will need to begin chemotherapy.

Mayra is a fighter, a mother, and a future nurse whose heart has always been in service to others. The financial burden of a cancer diagnosis paired with the costs of a new baby is overwhelming. We are asking our friends, fellow students, Cabrillo College faculty, and the community to come together to support Mayra during this fight.

Every donation, no matter the size, goes directly toward giving Mayra the peace of mind she needs to focus on her recovery and her child.
