Standing with LeRoy Through His Cancer Battle

On March 9, LeRoy Mitchell was diagnosed with Stage 4 oral cancer—a devastating recurrence of the tongue and tonsil cancer he bravely battled nearly 18 years ago.

On April 23, LeRoy underwent an extensive and complex surgery at the University of Minnesota. Surgeons removed part of his jawbone and tongue, along with all visible cancer in his mouth and throat. We are hopeful the cancer has been fully removed, but final confirmation will come after pathology results. At this time, additional treatments like radiation or chemotherapy are not expected, though that could still change.

We believe LeRoy’s cancer may be linked to exposure to Agent Orange during his service in the Air Force while in Vietnam. Unfortunately, the VA does not currently recognize his specific type of cancer as connected, adding another layer of hardship to this journey.

The road ahead will be long and difficult. Recovery will require extensive therapy, ongoing medical care. LeRoy now has a permanent feeding tube due to narrowing in his throat, and a tracheotomy has been placed during surgery—though it is not yet known if that will be permanent.

LeRoy is known and loved for his servant heart, especially through his role as Chief Cook at Community Meals, where he has faithfully cared for others. Though he must step away during recovery, he is already looking forward to the day he can return to serving the people he loves.

How you can help: Your support—whether through a donation, sharing this page, or lifting LeRoy up in prayer—means more than we can express. Every gift will go directly toward medical expenses, travel costs, and supporting LeRoy during his recovery.

We are deeply grateful for the love, generosity, and encouragement of this community. Thank you for standing with us.
