This is the story of my dear friend and brother-in-law, Joey Ramirez. He has just begun a journey that promises to be long, heavy, and uncertain. Confronting liver failure, the wait for a transplant, and the countless unknowns that accompany it can test even the strongest spirit.
Still, the worth Joey brings to the lives around him is immeasurable. We are better people simply because we know him. Anyone who has crossed paths with Joey, whether for a moment or over many years, can see how wonderfully made he is. We are grateful for who he is, not merely for what he does.
Joey has always lived with a heart inclined toward giving, freely, quietly, and without expectation of recognition. His generosity has never been measured by convenience. He has given his time, his resources, and his presence to people and causes that matter deeply to him. He has supported others financially, stepped in during difficult seasons, and never hesitated to help if it meant easing someone else’s burden.
More than anything, Joey gives his time; the most valuable thing any of us have. He listens when others need to be heard, serves when help is needed, and offers encouragement when hope feels distant. Many of his acts of kindness were done without announcement or credit, simply because he believed it was the right thing to do.
His faith has always been the foundation of the way he lives and gives. Joey has been deeply rooted in his local Catholic church, not seeking recognition, but committed to living out his faith through action. His devotion extended far beyond Sunday Mass. It has guided him on how he has treated others every day. To Joey, serving others was not optional, it was a calling.
Through his church, Joey consistently answered that call, supporting ministries, helping those in need, and standing beside others during their hardest moments. His faith was not just spoken, it was lived. He carried Christ’s love into everyday life, making others feel seen, valued, and supported.
“God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people.” Hebrews 6:10
Joey’s life is a testament to that verse. His generosity, faithfulness, and servant’s heart have left a lasting impact on countless lives. Now, in this season, it is our turn to give back to a man who has spent his life giving to others.
Joey is now facing a season of the unknown, balancing hope and gratitude alongside fear and sorrow. Each day is about holding onto the joy that he is still here. Anyone reading this, please know that Joey is worth your time, your prayers, and your support.
Along with prayer, Joey and his wife MaryAnn need financial help. They call San Angelo home, but Joey’s liver transplant will take place in San Antonio at Methodist Transplant and Specialty Hospital. Neither Joey nor MaryAnn is currently able to work. MaryAnn has been by his side from the moment they walked into the San Angelo hospital, learned his liver had completely shut down, and were transferred to San Antonio. You could not ask for a more loving, supportive, or compassionate wife.
Many people don’t realize how costly a liver transplant is, even with insurance. Without it? The expenses will be titanic! These expenses include a lengthy hospital stay, the transplant itself, over 30 days living in San Antonio for daily follow-up care, and the lifelong medications Joey will need. It may be months before MaryAnn can return to work. She will be the primary caregiver.
This is the biggest fight of Joey’s life. Through it all, he remains faithful, holding tightly to the truth that God is the way, the truth, and the light.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you… When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned.” Isaiah 43:2
Nothing about this season diminishes Joey’s worth or who he is.
As you read this, I ask you to reflect on the man God so wonderfully made. Joey needs people to walk alongside him, on the heavy days, the exhausting days, and the uncertain ones. If you are able, please consider giving financially. Every contribution matters.
By supporting Joey, you become part of this journey, part of the love, hope, and strength surrounding him as God grants him new life. We are here for every step he takes and every burden he carries, never losing sight of the man he is or the future ahead.
Joey, we love you – husband, brother, dad, son, friend, and our constant.
Thank you to all for your prayers, your generosity, and your love.
