I am trying to raise funds for an amazing woman who I recently met in Tucson under very scary circumstances. Isabel came here "the right way" but it didn't matter to ICE. Please read her story even if you can't donate and just sharing this fundraiser helps more than you know. Thank you!
Isabel is an asylum seeker from Venezuela who has recently been forced to move after her landlord called ICE on her. You can read more about Isabel's story here: https://tucson.com/news/local/border/article_823db1d7-1e69-43d3-9002-7e67aae54cd9.html
She was a firefighter captain in Venezuela, but after she was tortured and her father was murdered, she crossed the Darién Gap on foot and completed the arduous journey to the US, seeking safety. She is legally in the asylum process, a fact which compelled ICE to release her after unlawfully detaining her for 18 days in abysmal conditions in January. Isabel remains terrified of being detained again by ICE; she has also suffered wage theft, retaliation and threats, which have exacerbated her trauma and left her unable to leave the house and look for work. Currently, she survives by selling Venezuelan cheese from her kitchen. A small group of trusted friends and community members, are hoping to raise funds to support Isabel and her family during this terrifying time of state violence. Even a small amount can make a big difference letting Isabel and her family know they are supported.
