Standing with Eric: Veteran’s Fight Against Cancer

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Sabriel Maisonet, but this story isn’t mine. It’s my older brother’s, a wonderful man named Heriberto “Eric” Maisonet Estevez.

Eric is one of the toughest and strongest people I know. At 45 years of age, he’s an American Veteran, having served our country for 8 years of his life. He’s a loving husband, a father to two wonderful kids, but most of all he’s a man with nothing but kindness in his heart. Which is why it’s really hard to be putting this together, so I’ll get to the point.

Back in January of this year, Eric was taken to the ER for a severe pain in his left leg. Anyone who knows him knows that for him to seek help like this, it had to have been really bad. Unfortunately, he was discharged with a cancer diagnosis.

The specific diagnosis is pleomorphic spindle cell sarcoma. This is a rare and very aggressive form of cancer that has formed a lump on the back of his left thigh. Upon initial diagnosis, he was given an expectancy of five years.

Initially, he was to undergo radiation treatment to help reduce the size and save his leg. Since February, he has undergone 25 radiation and 2 immunotherapy treatments. However, the growth of the lump has been rapid since discovering it—now wrapping around his sciatic nerve, causing pain from his lower back to his toes—and unfortunately, the only option at this point is amputation.

On Friday, April 17, 2026, Eric will undergo Hip Disarticulation Surgery, which means amputation from the hip down.

Being a veteran, all costs of the treatments and the procedure are covered for him. But as anyone who has undergone a medical procedure knows, there are always more costs than the initial surgery.

The funds raised from this campaign will go towards helping Eric and his family in the lead up and the aftermath of his surgery. The money will go towards food, gas, and hotel costs while he undergoes surgery, as well as remodeling costs for his home, wheelchairs, and prosthetics.

The VA hospital does help send people to build a ramp on his home to assist with mobility. But as of right now, the true out-of-pocket costs are unknown.

Anything, ANYTHING raised from this campaign will help alleviate even a little burden during this harsh transition in their lives.

There’s a large age gap that Emily and I share with Eric. We didn’t get to spend a lot of time with him growing up. And I’ll be damned if five years is all we have left.

I implore you to donate if you have the means, I know these are trying times for everyone. If you can’t, that’s okay, but please share this to whoever you can.

Much love, be safe out there.

And from the bottom of my heart and every fiber of my being, Thank You.
