On March 31st, our world shifted. After experiencing persistent pain, my mom, Dionne Halstead, underwent a CT scan that revealed our worst fears: a mass in her colon and multiple large lesions throughout her liver. On Friday, April 3rd, we met with an oncologist who confirmed the diagnosis of Stage IV Colon Cancer.

The doctor has been very honest with us: this is treatable, but not curable. Our goal now is to manage the disease and give Mom the best quality of life possible for as long as possible.

While the diagnosis itself is heavy, the timing has created an even greater burden. Recently, Mom has been working a temporary position with the promise and expectation of being hired on full-time. Because she was still in that "temporary" phase, she was not yet eligible for health insurance.

The Plan and the Fight

Right now, we are in a waiting period. Mom’s biopsy is scheduled for this coming Friday. We won't know the exact treatment plan, whether it will be specific chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted drugs, until those biopsy results are back. From there, her medical team will determine the best course of action to fight this.

As of today, every single expense is being paid entirely out of pocket. On top of the mounting medical bills, she has already had to miss significant time at work for appointments and to manage the physical toll this is taking on her.
