Hi, my name is Morgan and I have the privilege of being married to the daughter of an incredible man, David Sayer. I am creating this GoFundMe to support my father-in-law, who is a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and to help lessen the financial burden as he continues his fight against adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC), a one-in-a-million cancer, literally.

David and my mother-in-law, Christine, practically grew up together. They met as babies in the same church and became childhood friends. They later fell in love and became high school sweethearts. Christine’s mom would not allow her to get married before graduation, so David proposed while she was still in school. He had graduated the year before, and they were married just a few days after Christine turned 18. They built a life together, raised two children, and now have four grandchildren who absolutely adore their Papa.

This journey began last February when David suddenly started experiencing strange symptoms he had never had before. Before this, David had always been healthy. He walked daily, took great care of himself, and had never needed medication. He essentially had a clean bill of health. After months of appointments and no answers, it was my wife, his daughter, who finally put the pieces together. David was diagnosed with Cushing syndrome caused by a tumor on his adrenal gland that was producing dangerously high cortisol levels. It was a shocking discovery for all of us.

In September, my wife and brother-in-law traveled with David and Christine to Tampa to see a surgeon who specializes in adrenal tumors. A tumor measuring over seven centimeters was removed, and pathology confirmed clean margins. We hoped that surgery would bring a fresh start. However, because this cancer is so rare, David had to continue care with an expert in adrenocortical carcinoma. He is now under the care of a specialist who spent many years studying this disease at the National Cancer Institute. This will require ongoing travel to New York. He undergoes CT scans every three months, frequent lab work, and takes an oral medication called Mitotane which is hard on the body, but is the only medication that is approved for treatment for this cancer. Mitotane unfortunately comes at a high cost of close to $6,000 a month.

Just after Christmas, David had his second follow-up CT scan. We learned that the cancer has returned, and it appears to have spread to the lining of his stomach. The next step is another surgery with will likely come along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, a highly aggressive treatment where chemotherapy is delivered during surgery. David and Christine must travel back to New York at the end of the month for consultations, a PET scan, and appointments with both his oncologist and surgeon. They will then return home briefly before flying back again within one to two weeks for surgery.

This journey has placed a tremendous emotional and financial strain on David and our entire family. Watching someone so deeply loved and so selfless face such a battle has been incredibly difficult for everyone who knows him.

His care now requires frequent travel between Athens, Georgia and New York City, with several more trips expected for surgery, treatment, and follow up appointments for pre-op and post-op care. Between travel expenses, lodging, medical bills, and time away from work for David and Christine, the costs continue to grow.

We are humbly asking for support to help ease the financial pressure during this challenging time. Every donation will go directly toward medical care, travel, lodging, surgeries, and treatment expenses. Your support, whether through a contribution, a prayer, or simply sharing this page, means more than words can express and allows our family to focus on what matters most, David’s healing.

Thank you for standing with David and our family as he continues this fight.
