On October 15, 2026, our community was changed forever by the unimaginable tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. In a moment of absolute terror, my dear friend and dedicated educator, Cassidy Schutz, acted with profound bravery. Those of us who know and love Cassidy know that Cassidy's actions were nothing short of heroic. While we grieve deeply for the lives lost, we are profoundly grateful for Cassidy’s presence of mind and courage during those terrifying moments.

I have had the privilege of knowing Cassidy for years and working alongside Cassidy as a fellow educator and high school basketball coach. I have watched Cassidy support students in difficult moments, help them learn academic skills, and work with players to achieve success on the court. Cassidy has a true heart for students and players, and October 15 was no exception.

However, carrying the weight of such an event takes an immense toll. Cassidy put everything on the line for students, and now it is our turn to stand up for Cassidy. As Cassidy navigates the aftermath and trauma of this event, the road to recovery, both physically and emotionally, will be long.
