Aubrey desperately needs our help.
I sit here in shock, disbelief, and denial as I write this.
On Thursday, April 16th, Aubrey found out that she has a very rare, very aggressive cancer.
It started in her abdomen - which explains the severe weight loss - and has spread into both lungs and into her brain, which means it’s Stage 4.
There are no words and nothing can prepare you for that news.
On top of all that she lost her health insurance Dec 2025, but she should qualify for Medicaid (in 45 days) so hoping that will cover her treatments from that point forward.
Right now she is in immediate need of money for food, rent and utilities - and the initial oncology visits until Medicaid kicks in.
She had her first visit at Moffitt in Land O’ Lakes on April 29th and we officially have a treatment plan!!
Thanks to the countless hospital stays, her frequent bouts of “stomach flu” (turns out it wasn’t stomach flu), her ever-present migraines that are worsening day-by-day, and her unpredictable energy levels, she has been “let go” and/or “politely forced out” of her last two jobs. Now that she is starting the Hail Mary of treatments, she will not be able to look for and start a new job until her cancer is under control and her health stabilizes.
Some days she literally cannot get out of bed or be far from the bathroom and when her sodium drops, it means another hospital stay. This last stay in April was 5 days - 3 in the ICU and 2 days in PCU - and the time before that, in January, she was in ICU for over a week.
She hates that we are doing a GFM - but there is no choice right now.
If you have any leads on part-time or remote, non-physically taxing work, please let us know. Temp work or filling in here and there would be ideal as her ability to function on any given day is so unpredictable. One day she wakes up feeling great and tackles the world. The next day, it’s crawling from the bed to the couch to the bathroom without any energy left to cook, so a flexible schedule is key. And her energy and clarity are best in the evening or at night, so 2nd shift or 3rd shift would be best.
If you know Aubrey, you know she is a strong independent person who worked three jobs when we met in high school to keep the lights on and food on the table at her mother’s house. That is the type of person she is - a force of nature who takes care of the people she loves and now she needs our help while she navigates life with cancer.
Also - this is new to us, so if you have any ideas / resources / experience with local, state, federal benefits, private grants or other programs, please let us know - we are ready to apply for any and everything!
While food and rent are the biggest and most immediate concerns. She is currently living solo in an apartment that is “reasonably priced for St Pete”, but as we all know St Pete is no longer an affordable place to live - esp without income. So if you have any ideas in that regard, please let us know!!
If you can, please donate to this GFM, or to her directly via Venmo - and hey, cash also works - literally anything to help keep her fed and housed until we can come up with a plan B would be greatly appreciated.
If you can’t donate, please like and share this GFM to help get it out there in front of new eyeballs.
Lastly - and possibly most importantly - we want to hear your success stories. We are scared and angry that this wasn’t caught sooner since the signs have literally been there since 2022 - most notably her chronic low sodium and her extreme weight loss being the two biggest clues that were either dismissed or ignored (trust there will be a separate rant on all that later). But instead of being mad right now, we need to focus on healing and would love to hear the good stuff so we can focus on that.
Aubrey is ready to FIGHT!!!
And now is the time for all of us to have her back!
Thank you for helping my best friend.
With all my love and light,
Carla Kaufman
