Standing with Angie Through Her Amputation

As many of you know Angie was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer in December of 2024. She spent the entire year of 2025 receiving in patient chemo 3/4weeks every month. During this time she went through several limb salvage surgeries with the hopes of saving her leg. Over the course of 1 year she’s had about 7 separate surgeries on her leg.
In January 2026 she had 2 additional surgeries. During one of these they aren’t sure which they introduced 2 bacteria's into her leg. This created a built up pocket of fluid along with a new wound area where her leg reopened. They did another surgery to debrive the leg and pocket, drain it, sterilize the leg, and placed another drain tube and wound vac. They then did a knee joint aspiration to check if the hardware in her leg was infected. At this time we were told if it was the hardware would be removed, replaced with antibiotic spacers for some time, then all new hardware put back in.
This test unfortunately came back positive which meant her hardware was in fact infected. Her surgeon had an immediate appointment with us at which time we were told some shocking news….
Due to the type of hardware she has and the fact that it’s fused to the little bit of old bone she has they cannot get the hardware back out. Along with that the only way they can get her leg closed would be a 10-12 hour long surgery. With all of this in combination with her not being allowed to do physical therapy for a year her leg is considered non-function.
Her surgeon said at this time the only way to keep her safe would be to amputate her leg well above the knee because the hardware can’t be cleaned of the bacteria and it can turn sepsis at any time.
This was unexpected and has been something hard to process along with only having a couple weeks to take it all in filled with non stop appointments. We have met with a prosthetic company to go over basic information. She will require new equipment along with a special customized prosthetic leg. The starting price for these is $53,000 which increases depending on the different pieces she will require to compose the leg. Along with this she will need a different style wheelchair as right now she uses her walker in the house and wheelchair outside but after her surgery she will need a wheelchair with specific wheels that can grip carpet along with better grip on outside terrains to keep her safer. We do have insurance and this will help tremendously but there will be a lot of out of pocket costs that we were not in any way prepared for.
We thank everybody from the bottom of our hearts for all the kindness, motivation, and support ♥️
