For more than 30 years, Tommy Whitmire has been the kind of man every community hopes to have standing beside them in times of crisis. As a volunteer firefighter, Tommy has spent decades answering calls in the middle of the night, running toward danger while others ran away from it, and giving his time, strength, and heart to help anyone in need.
Now, Tommy is the one who needs us.
Just weeks ago, what began as a simple cut on his foot turned into a devastating medical emergency. The infection became toxic, and in order to save his life, Tommy lost his leg above the knee. In a matter of days, his entire world changed.
The physical pain is unimaginable, but so is the emotional weight that comes with such a life-altering loss. Tommy now faces months of recovery, extensive therapy in Chapel Hill, constant travel for medical care, and at least six months or more away from work. The road ahead will be long, difficult, and expensive.
But if there’s one thing anyone who knows Tommy can tell you, it’s this: he does not give up.
His spirit is strong, his heart is huge and just as he has spent his life lifting others up, we now have the opportunity to lift him up in return. He doesn’t know a stranger and is always laughing…even now.
The amount Tommy will need going forward is ever changing, and there’s simply no way to predict all the expenses that come with something this life-altering. The medical bills have already started arriving in the mail, and they are beyond daunting. This goal is simply a starting point — a springboard to help cover medical expenses, travel, gas, food, therapy, and the countless day-to-day costs that will come as Tommy begins this long road to recovery. Every single dollar raised will go toward helping lighten that burden and giving Tommy one less thing to worry about as he heals.
Every donation — no matter the amount — will help ease the burden of medical expenses, travel costs, recovery needs, and everyday bills during this difficult chapter. If you are unable to give financially, we ask for your prayers, your shares, and your support.
Tommy has spent a lifetime showing up for this community. Now it’s our turn to show up for him.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for every prayer, every donation, and every act of kindness shown to Tommy and his family.
God bless you all.
