Emilia has been a fighter from the very beginning. When she was born, her mom Nina developed eclampsia and went into cardiac arrest shortly after arriving at Southlake Hospital. Doctors performed an emergency C-section at 29 weeks. While Nina recovered at Southlake, tiny Emilia was cared for at SickKids…. it was weeks before mother and daughter could finally meet. Emilia was already proving her strength.

Now, two years later, Emilia faces another battle. She began showing signs of imbalance, her posture shifted to the right and her head slightly tilted showing signs of discomfort. On August 16, Nina brought her to the SickKids Emergency Department. Scans revealed a large tumour located on the left side of her cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance and coordination. On August 19, a day before Emilia’s birthday, the incredible neurosurgery team at SickKids removed a large portion of the tumour.

August 22, doctors confirmed the tumour is an ATRT (Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumour)—a rare form of childhood brain cancer. Further testing is now underway to determine how aggressive the tumour is and what the next steps in treatment will be.

Nina, a devoted single mother, will be by her daughter’s side through every step of this journey. While she has the love and support of her family, the road ahead will bring many challenges and unexpected expenses.
