Our family never imagined that cancer would become such a major part of our lives. My name is Sammy Ocampo, and I am the oldest of three brothers. I’m writing this for my youngest brother, Diego, who is only 13 years old and is currently fighting bone cancer. Recently, Diego underwent surgery to have a tumor removed, and our family is now facing the difficult road ahead as he continues his fight. Diego is a fighter in every way. He has played football since he was in kindergarten, and football has always been a huge part of who he is. For as long as I can remember, my brothers and I have shared one special number: 8. All three of us have worn it, and it has become our family’s lucky number. Now, Diego’s teammates have given that number an even greater meaning.“Number 8 Strong.” Those words represent exactly who Diego is. Strong. Determined. Resilient. And surrounded by people who believe in him. Unfortunately, this is not the first time cancer has affected our family. During my senior year of high school, our dad was diagnosed and treated for testicular cancer . Last year, during my sophomore year of college, our mom was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and underwent surgery this year. And now, our youngest brother is facing cancer at just 13 years old. Over the past few years, our family has experienced more fear, uncertainty, and hardship than we ever could have imagined. Watching my little brother go through something this serious has been especially difficult. No child should have to worry about cancer, surgeries, treatments, or what the future may hold.

Through all of this, our family has continued to stand together. We are doing everything we can to support Diego and help him through whatever comes next. The least I am asking for is that you keep my brother in your thoughts and prayers in order to show him that he is not alone and has a huge community behind him. For all of you who do not know Diego, he has the biggest heart, and being his older brother is one of the greatest honors of my life. I couldn’t be prouder of the person he is or the strength he has shown. No matter what comes next, I will always be in his corner. Te amo hermanito ❤️. #8STRONG
