If you know Mike Duganier, you know exactly who he is. He's the guy who brings energy into the room: fun, outgoing, and always trying to build something better. For years, Mike has poured his heart and soul into creating restaurants that aren't just places to eat, but places people love being in. If you've been to one of his Publico restaurants, you've experienced the great atmosphere, food, and people. And he's worked for it—nothing has been handed to him.
What you might not have known is that recently, Mike has been the victim of a massive embezzlement scheme that cost his restaurants dearly. This money, hundreds of thousands of dollars, was stolen by a trusted employee over several years. The employee was found guilty and sentenced to over six years in prison. However, the court ordered her to repay only a very small amount each month, and that won't even begin until she is released from jail. This means Mike will only receive minimal repayment, which does little to help him recoup the significant losses he has suffered. Because of this, he had to close one of his amazing restaurants, Boku, that he worked so hard to get up and running. As a close friend, I have witnessed the stress he has endured over the past three years. It has been heartbreaking to see and hear about the strain, worry, and pressure he has been under. He is still fighting. Still showing up. Still his outgoing, energetic self!
I'm asking for help, not because our friend would ever ask for it himself, but because sometimes even the hardest working people need support from their friends. If you know Mike, have eaten at one of his amazing restaurants, or just believe in people who do things the right way, please consider donating or sharing. If you're able to contribute, thank you. If not, sharing this means just as much. Let's help Mike get back some of what was taken from him!
