I am reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for your love, prayers, and support for my uncle, Mike Haire. Yesterday, Mike underwent massive open-heart surgery after suffering a severe heart attack. The surgery lasted over nine hours; four arteries were replaced, one heart valve was replaced, and his heart was cauterized to prevent future atrial fibrillation. It truly was a massive surgery and while we are incredibly grateful he made it through, the road to recovery will be long and uncertain.

Mike works as a school custodian and will be out of work for at least six months, possibly longer, as he recovers. Unfortunately, his short-term disability benefits will not begin for two to three months. In the meantime, his family is left without his paycheck, their main source of income. While his wife, Fran Haire, a retired school teacher, plans to start substitute teaching as soon as she can, schools don’t begin calling for subs until later in September, and with the way the pay schedule works, the earliest she would receive even a small paycheck would be the end of October.

In order to stay afloat with their bills and household needs, we estimate that Mike and his family will need about $5,000–$6,000 during this gap. This will help cover the basics—rent, utilities, groceries, and medical-related expenses—so that Mike can focus fully on his recovery without the crushing stress of financial instability.
