Everyone — Sherman Needs Our Help!

This sweet boy was the victim of a freak accident at his foster home just two days ago. During a fully supervised play session, Sherman was injured by a larger foster sibling. What started as a normal part of his foster care — learning to socialize with other dogs — turned into a devastating moment in the blink of an eye.

Sherman’s upper and lower jaw were both destroyed in the incident, and he also suffered a severe leg fracture. He was rushed to El Paso Animal Emergency Center thanks to his foster mom’s immediate response, and that quick action gave him a fighting chance at life.

But Sherman cannot make it through this without help.

He is currently hospitalized, on pain control, and awaiting reconstructive surgery and orthopedic repair. His injuries are critical, but treatable — if we can fund his care.

Sherman is the definition of a gentle soul. He loves sunbathing in the yard, tug-of-war games, and curling up with a bone for nap time. He’s sweet, silly, and full of love — and he didn’t deserve this.

This was a tragic accident — the kind that can happen even with responsible fostering and well socialized dogs(even the most trust worthy dogs can have bad days or get very stressed around foster dynamic, and we often have no way of foreseeing this.) His care was fully supervised, his socialization was part of a standard foster plan, and his foster mom did everything right. Thanks to her fast thinking and immediate action Sherman is still with us. But he is FIGHTING for his life and if he is going to make it he needs us to fight with him.

Thank you for being part of his fight. Labor of Love Project does not have the grants for big unexpected proedures like this. We are a small and already under supported rescue and the director and many of the volunteers already put huge parts of their personal paychecks to covering just basic costs of dogs. This rescue single handedly reduced the euth rate of the portales animal shelter from 90% to well under 10% . They do AMAZING work so please no remarks about how the rescue should have the resources for this. I agree, rescues should be supplemented better, BUT they are not and this is not anyone at the rescue fault. We advocate for these animals every day in every way possible and today that means asking (even begging) you for whatever you have to give (whether that be money, a share, or even a kind thought or word of support to sherman, his foster mom, or our rescue team.) This is not something we like to do and this is HARD.
