For years, Shawna felt something was wrong with her gynecological health, but tests only indicated perimenopause, including an undetectable left ovary. Despite reassurances, her intuition persisted. Symptoms like hair loss, fatigue, and unexplained weight gain followed, yet tests remained inconclusive. In August 2024, severe pain and vomiting sent her to the ER, but she was dismissed with a "virus" diagnosis. Persistent pain led to November tests revealing a Vitamin D deficiency and an 11cm gallbladder polyp, offering some answers.
During December 2024 gallbladder surgery, cancer was discovered. Biopsies confirmed an ovarian tumor and cancerous cells on her perineum, likely from her "missing" ovary. Diagnosed with stage 3C ovarian cancer and possessing a BRCA1 mutation, Shawna began an aggressive treatment plan: chemotherapy, a hysterectomy, and immunotherapy. She combines holistic therapies like yoga, acupuncture, and nutrition with conventional medicine, and her CA-125 levels dropped after the first chemo, affirming her determination.
After Shawna's second chemo treatment, her CA-125 was down to 49.9 from 667 at diagnosis just under 2 months prior. This strong response to her course of treatment has primed her for the full hysterectomy, the final pages of this chapter. Surgery is scheduled for March 25th, and the healing required will not allow her to return to work for an extended period.
Despite the upcoming financial strain from her inability to work, Shawna remains focused on healing. Embracing her warrior spirit, she is confident she will overcome this challenge and continue fulfilling her life’s purpose! Please raise awareness of the sneaky symptoms of ovarian cancer!
