On May 18, 2026, our dear friend Rutilo “Shorty” Vega was detained by ICE while working in Bonham, Texas. Rutilo has lived in the United States for more than 30 years and has spent nearly 29 of those years building a life in Bonham, where he is loved by many people in the community.
Rutilo is a devoted husband, loving father of six, and one of the hardest-working and most thoughtful people you could ever meet. He is funny, upbeat, generous, and always thinking of others. He is the kind of person who remembers birthdays, checks in on friends, and quietly helps people whenever they are in need. Every year without fail, he calls me on my birthday just to make me smile. That is the kind of man he is.
His story is one of perseverance and sacrifice. Rutilo lost both of his parents when he was only 8 years old and spent part of his childhood selling pumpkin seeds and bubble gum in San Luis de la Paz, Mexico, just to survive. He came to the United States at 16 years old searching for opportunity and a better future. He worked whatever jobs he could find, washing dishes, doing odd jobs, and eventually building a career in plumbing work, which he has done for nearly three decades.
Everything Rutilo has worked for has been for his family. His wife and children depend on him deeply, both emotionally and financially. On May 22, he will miss his 18-year-old son’s high school graduation while sitting in detention. No father should have to miss such an important milestone with his child under these circumstances.
We anticipate legal fees and filing fees will exceed $40,000 as the family fights to keep Rutilo home. In addition to attorney costs, there will be ongoing expenses for commissary funds, phone calls, transportation, and daily support for his wife and children during this incredibly difficult time. We have also been told his detention could last anywhere from 4–6 months or longer while his case moves through the system.
Rutilo is a hardworking man who has spent decades contributing to his community, supporting his family, and trying to build a better life through hard work.
Any donation, share, or message of support means more than words can express. Thank you for standing with Rutilo Vega and his family during one of the hardest moments of their lives.
