This is Rubén Dario Caal Chocoj from Guatemala. Please help us pay for an attorney to get Rubén out of ICE detention in Texas and back to his community in Syracuse.

He fled his home country because criminal groups of narcotraficking cartels were forcing him to work for them, but young Rubén refused. The cartels threatened him with death, and Ruben, only 15 years old, had to flee all alone to save his life. It took great character and strength for Ruben, just a teenager, to escape the threats he faced in Guatemala, leaving his country all by himself at such a young age, suffering many dangers and unknown hardships throughout the thousands of miles through foreign countries to finally make it to the United States. He filed with immigration and his SIJ (Special Immigrant Juvenile) application is pending. He is now 18 and is enrolled in high-school, improving his English and studying to earn his GED, with a dream to be part of the US army and become a citizen. Ruben already demonstrates he has what it takes to be a great US citizen: integrity, a very strong work ethic, self-discipline, respect for authority and a deep love for our beloved United States of America.

Ruben’s ESL teacher shared, “Ruben is one of the most hardworking students I've encountered during my years of teaching. Despite the many challenges he has faced, he remains deeply committed to his education.”

Ruben is kind, very well-mannered and humble. He is quick to smile and lend a hand. He is honest, diligent, responsible and hard-working. He loves school and his teachers tell us he is an exceptional student and is an excellent role model in every way for the other students.

Following all the required immigrant paperwork and check-ins, on November 11, 2025, he presented himself at an appointment with ICE. Unfortunately, he was detained by ICE and taken to the Batavia Detention Center. Quickly he was moved to a South Texas facility which is overcrowded beyond capacity, so Ruben suffers inhumane conditions; he must sleep on the floor and eat terrible food, under bright lights that are on 24/7 (a form of torture).

Right now he needs an immigration lawyer to take on his case to fight to get him released to his community of friends he has developed here in Syracuse. Unfortunately, there are no pro-bono lawyers available, so we must raise the $8,000-10,000 fee for the lawyer through donations. Please help Ruben with as much as you can to get him out of prison/detainment.
