On the morning of Thursday, January 2nd, 2025, two victims were shot by a resident of the Tahanan, a permanent supportive housing complex in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. One of the victims was Rosa Flores, a custodian at the facility who was shot multiple times through her right arm. Rosa did nothing to provoke the attack, in which a social worker was also critically injured. Police did not initially respond to the 911 call made by the front desk worker, as the Tahanan is notorious for illicit activity. A second call had to be made to secure emergency response services for the victims. These are the places the city forgets until tragic events like this happen.
While complexes like the Tahanan have become symbols of the city's decline, for people like Rosa, this is their place of work. Rosa Flores and others like her form the invisible frontline of the fight against the city's epidemics of homelessness, substance use, and mental illness. They receive little credit for the work they do, the communities they serve, the sacrifices they make. They are not even named when they become victims of preventable acts of violence. This needs to change. This GoFundMe intends to name the victim of this horrific event and to show her that San Francisco has her back. The workers who dedicate their services to these facilities and their clientele have a right to safety and security. The people who labor every day to make our city better have names, faces, families, and their recognition should not require catastrophic events to happen.
Unfortunately, Rosa continues to suffer from her injuries, both physically and mentally. Having been shot multiple times through her right arm in an unprovoked attack, she has already returned to work wearing a sling. She continues to have nightmares from the unimaginable trauma she experienced simply doing her job. The purpose of this fundraiser is to show our support for Rosa, one of San Francisco's invisible heroes. All funds raised here will go directly to Rosa and her family, to support her healing and recovery.
