Who Organized this Campaign:
My name is Helene Hebert, I am the Treasurer of the Turnor Lake & Birch Narrows Community Food Centre Inc. (TL&BNCFC). I just moved to Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. Before that, I lived 2.5 years in Birch Narrows, Saskatchewan, Canada. I am in charge of keeping healthy finances for our organization, and writing proposals to bring to reality the vision of the local indigenous people on food security and healthy food knowledge. I used to be a Professional Engineer and Project Manager. Now I am a mom and devoted volunteer with this amazing organization.
How the Funds Will Be Used:
100% of the funds will go towards purchasing and installing a new furnace into our building. This is our most urgent priority.

Meeting Rebecca
As soon as my neighbour Rebecca Sylvestre talked to me about her vision of sharing with children and their parents about preparing healthy food together and passing on indigenous food traditions from the Elders to the younger generations, I was hooked and have been volunteering by her side ever since. Rebecca has an incredible drive, leadership and tenacity in the face of adversity. In 2018, she teamed up with a group of volunteers to incorporate the first non-profit organization of her area called the Turnor Lake & Birch Narrows Community Food Centre Inc (TL&BNCFC). The remarkable work this organization is doing has the potential to be reproduced elsewhere in Northern Canadian indigenous communities and improve food security for so many children and their families.
TL&BNCFC
Rebecca and the TL&BNCFC are in a small, remote community in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada. The remoteness of this community drives the cost of fresh produce up and leads to fewer healthy choices for many families in this region. The organization is currently building an addition to the building it occupies in order to have a new community kitchen. In the first 4 months of operation (year 2018), along with generous donations from our partners and countless hours from volunteers, this organization brought in an amazing amount of healthy food to the community. Over 2,260 healthy meals were cooked by members of the community and distributed and about 520 healthy snacks were provided during the workshops to kids, elders, new mothers and such. Generous donations allowed for 6 moose to be prepared, smoked and dried as per traditional First Nation practices, which is enough to produce about 300 meals. Cooking all this nutritious food has been good for people’s physical and mental health and has brought a community together. These events encourage engagement and give people from Turnor Lake and Birch Narrows access to healthy food while teaching indigenous traditional food practices that are vital to the health of the community.

URGENT CALL FOR YOUR HELP
Many partners have been contributing to this initiative: Canadian Feed the Children, Community Food Centres Canada, CrossRoads, Kehew Construction, Schwing’s Meating Place Ltd, Services Comptables Lucien Hébert, Tony Kusch and True North Aid. Despite their support, we urgently need your assistance. The weather has been so cold this winter (weeks between -40°C and -50°C) that the furnace of this organization has been breaking often, causing pipes and the hot water tank to freeze. This interferes with the construction of the new community kitchen, which affects the ability to carry out some of the food programs. Due to the renovations not being completed, this organization has had to use other locations to host most food workshops (the school kitchen and gym as a dining room, the Health Clinic kitchen, the daycare). This is affecting the size of our events and the attendance. The old furnace urgently needs to be replaced. All money raised will go towards purchasing a new furnace for our building. This organization has been showing great financial accountability as it passes regular audits from an independent professional accountant. Please consider donating and sharing this page. Help Rebecca and the TL&BNCFC continue their good work.
