I am Paul. One of my workers needs our help and this is his story.

I’ve worked hard for my entire life and have always thought of myself as a provider for others. Other than a few orthopedic issues and surgeries, I’ve always thought I was pretty healthy. Now, as I’m looking at the approach of my 60th year circling the sun, I find myself to be the one in need.

On the 20th of November this year, I was at work just like any other day when I suddenly experienced something that I can honestly say left me scared for my life. I found myself losing consciousness and I can now only recall bits and pieces of what was happening. My co-workers were very quick to respond and transported me to the closest emergency room. I am so thankful for their quick action.

After a stay in the hospital and what feels like more tests than I’ve had my entire life, it was discovered that what was going on inside my brain was not the first incident of my problems. There were clear signs of a previously unknown stroke in my occipital lobe and the dead tissue left behind. None of the medical professionals were able to nail down exactly when this stroke occurred, but I’m convinced it was when I was laid up with Covid a couple of years back. Including this newly discovered previous “issue,” there were a total of three problems going on in my brain. I don’t know what tomorrow has in store for me, but today is a struggle. I’ve attempted to return to work, but it’s clear to me and everyone around me that I’m just not ready. My primary doctor has placed me on leave with an expected return to work in February.

In addition to my everyday bills and normal expenses, the medical bills have started rolling in and there are more looming as further tests have been scheduled. I’ve reached my maximum out of pocket for this year with the unpaid medical bills and will soon burn through the maximum for next year too. That alone is $12,000 plus the added stress of my everyday bills and basic needs. The more I think about it, the more I can feel the stress. I need your help.
