Stand with Paul: Defend Interfaith Values

Hi, my name is Paul. I’m a condo owner in Houston, Texas, and I’m reaching out to ask for your support during an incredibly difficult time.

For the past two years, I’ve experienced ongoing and deeply distressing incidents that I believe are connected to my peaceful expression of interfaith values. After placing symbols representing Unitarian Universalism, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism on my door, I began experiencing harassment that has made me feel unsafe in my own home.

These incidents have included verbal abuse in shared spaces, unwanted surveillance, disturbing comments captured on security cameras—including being called “pure evil”—and garbage repeatedly being left outside my door. In the most serious case, my car was vandalized: its tires were slashed, the windshield was shattered, and religious slurs and symbols were painted on the vehicle. The word “devil” was written across it, along with other hostile messages, including a slur used against homosexuals. These actions occurred just before a planned mediation session—one I ultimately withdrew from out of concern for my safety.

Despite repeated requests, I’ve received no meaningful support from the group responsible for overseeing the property. Unfortunately, in Texas, there are no government agencies with the authority to hold homeowner associations or similar groups accountable. That leaves residents like me with no recourse but to pursue justice independently—something that can be financially and emotionally overwhelming. This is my only viable path to stand up for my rights and protect my well-being.

I’m now fundraising to help cover legal expenses, personal safety measures, and the cost of repairing the vandalism to my vehicle. This journey has taken a serious toll, but I believe in the importance of standing up for dignity, safety, and freedom from harassment in the place you call home.
