My name is Whitney, and I am creating this fundraiser on behalf of my housekeeper's family during the most devastating time of their lives.
Last week, 16-year-old Orell Reyes was doing something ordinary and innocent. After football practice, he stopped to buy a Coke for his friends. In a matter of seconds, everything changed. Orell and several others were shot. Orell was struck in the back, and the bullet remains lodged in his spine.
Orell is a kind, respectful young man with a bright future ahead of him. He is a dedicated athlete, a loving son, and a teenager with dreams that should be focused on school, sports, and friendships, not fighting for his life.
The shooting left Orell paralyzed. Since then, he has endured severe complications, including dangerous infections and recurring high fevers. His family has been desperately seeking medical care, but resources are limited. Doctors have determined that Orell needs specialized treatment abroad where surgeons can evaluate and potentially remove the bullet from his spine.
For Orell's family, this medical journey is financially impossible without help. They are facing overwhelming expenses for transportation, surgery, hospitalization, rehabilitation, lodging, and ongoing care.
Today, I am asking friends, family, neighbors, and compassionate strangers around the world to come together for this young Belizean man.
No 16-year-old should lose the chance to run, play football, pursue an education, or build the future he imagined because of a senseless act of violence. Orell's greatest wish is simple: he wants the opportunity to walk again. He wants the chance to continue chasing his hopes, his dreams, and the life that was stolen from him in an instant.
