I have had the honor and pleasure of working with a very special 16 year-old Chicago Public School student for the past 9 months. Ofelia is bright, curious, and thoughtful. The circumstances in which I became her teacher are unconventional. She has been battling Stage 4 Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS), a rare and aggressive form of cancer since December 2024. I am Ofelia’s in-home teacher while she is being treated for cancer. Through my time working with Ofelia, I have grown close to her family and have learned what a dedicated mother and hard-working and loving father she has.

On October 18, 2025 her father, Ruben Torres, was coming out of the Home Depot on Dempster in Niles with supplies for his job. ICE agents called out to him by name. He attempted to ignore them and got in his car and locked the door. That is when one of the four ICE agents started smashing the passenger side of his car in an attempt to get in. One ICE agent proceeded to pull out his gun and threaten her father with it. This is when her father willingly got out of the car. He was forced on the ground and then detained.

Please help support this family through this unprecedented time.

Funds raised will be applied to her father’s legal fees and to support the family while he is being unlawfully detained.

Ofelia wanted me to share that any funds raised that her family does not need, they will donate to other families impacted by ICE activity. This is a testament to the kind of person her family raised.

He tenido el honor y el placer de trabajar con una estudiante muy especial de 16 años de la Escuela Pública de Chicago durante los últimos 9 meses. Ofelia es inteligente, curiosa y reflexiva. Las circunstancias en las que me convertí en su profesora son poco convencionales. Desde diciembre de 2024, ella ha estado luchando contra un rabdomiosarcoma alveolar (ARMS) en estadio 4, un tipo de cáncer raro y agresivo. Soy el profesor a domicilio de Ofelia mientras recibe tratamiento contra el cáncer. El 18 de octubre de 2025, su padre, Rubén Torres, salía de la tienda Home Depot de Dempster, en Niles, con material para su trabajo. Los agentes del ICE lo llamaron por su nombre. Él intentó ignorarlos, se subió a su coche y cerró la puerta con llave. Fue entonces cuando uno de los cuatro agentes del ICE comenzó a golpear el lado del pasajero de su coche para intentar entrar. Uno de los agentes del ICE sacó su arma y amenazó a su padre con ella. Fue entonces cuando su padre salió voluntariamente del coche. Lo obligaron a tirarse al suelo y luego lo detuvieron.
