Hello. My name is Neybet. My husband, Alberto, and I are part of the indigenous Wayuu peoples, native to the territory along the Columbia-Venezuela border. Because of the location of our people and our land along the border of these two countries, many members of our community have been kidnapped, tortured, and murdered over the years, by narcotraffickers and other insurgent groups.

In 2023, we made the difficult decision to flee our home country of Columbia and leave our people to seek safety in the United States, because Alberto had been kidnapped by one of these groups, and although we were eventually able to secure his release, we feared that the next time, he may not be so lucky. So we came to the United States in April 2023, and settled in Memphis, Tennessee. We found an attorney in Memphis who has been helping us develop our asylum case and prepare for our court hearing before the immigration judge.

In June, I gave birth to our first child, Victoria, and we were filled with joy at her arrival. I am still recovering physically from her birth, and have not yet been able to return to work. On Thursday morning, August 14, 2025, Victoria and I went with Alberto to our ISAP check-in appointments, as usual. Alberto was called back for his appointment around 10:30AM. I was in the waiting room with Victoria and was finally called back for my appointment around 11:30AM. When I returned to the waiting room, I realized that Alberto still had not come out from his appointment. I asked our caseworker what had happened and why he had not returned to the waiting room. She sent an ICE agent out to tell me that he had been arrested and was being sent to a detention facility in Louisiana. They didn't give me any explanation as to why they took my husband and left me to care for our newborn girl all alone.

I have spoken to Alberto by phone, who is now being held in the Richwood Correctional Center in Monroe, Louisiana, even though he has never committed any crime or had any criminal charges of any kind whatsoever. Although I was glad to learn that he is at least physically okay right now, I am concerned about his living conditions there and he has expressed to me that he is so concerned about me and Victoria being left on our own, that he is considering abandoning his case and requesting to be deported, even though he would face death upon his return to Colombia, and that is something so horrible I don't even want to imagine it.

We are trying to raise the money we will need to hire an attorney in Louisiana to petition the immigration judge there for a bond to secure Alberto's release. The cost of hiring a new attorney will be approximately $2,000-3,000, just to hire him for the bond hearing. If the bond is granted, we will need to come up with the money to pay the bond to secure his release. If he is denied bond, we will need money to fight his case from detention, at a cost of probably $5,000 or more. And all this while I am trying my best to care for our newborn girl while still physically recovering from giving birth and being unable to return to work.

We need help. I don't want Alberto to give up hope, but without the money to secure his release, I am worried that he will give up out of desperation and concern for our well-being. If you can spare anything, even $5 or $10, please help us.

En 2023, tomamos la difícil decisión de huir de nuestra Colombia natal y dejar a nuestra gente en busca de seguridad en Estados Unidos, ya que Alberto había sido secuestrado por uno de estos grupos. Aunque finalmente logramos su liberación, temíamos que la próxima vez no tuviera tanta suerte. Así que llegamos a Estados Unidos en abril de 2023 y nos establecimos en Memphis, Tennessee. Encontramos un abogado en Memphis que nos ha estado ayudando a desarrollar nuestro caso de asilo y a prepararnos para nuestra audiencia ante el juez de inmigración.

En junio, di a luz a nuestra primera hija, Victoria, y nos llenó de alegría su llegada. Todavía me estoy recuperando físicamente de su parto y aún no he podido volver al trabajo. El jueves 14 de agosto de 2025 por la mañana, Victoria y yo fuimos con Alberto a nuestras citas de registro de ISAP, como de costumbre. Llamaron a Alberto para su cita alrededor de las 10:30 a. m. Yo estaba en la sala de espera con Victoria y finalmente me llamaron para mi cita alrededor de las 11:30 a. m. Al regresar a la sala de espera, me di cuenta de que Alberto aún no había salido de su cita. Le pregunté a nuestra trabajadora social qué había sucedido y por qué no había regresado a la sala de espera. Ella envió a un agente de ICE para informarme que lo habían arrestado y lo enviarían a un centro de detención en Luisiana. No me dieron ninguna explicación de por qué se llevaron a mi esposo y me dejaron sola al cuidado de nuestra recién nacida.

He hablado por teléfono con Alberto, quien se encuentra recluido en el Centro Correccional Richwood en Monroe, Luisiana, a pesar de no haber cometido ningún delito ni tener cargos penales de ningún tipo. Aunque me alegró saber que al menos se encuentra bien físicamente, me preocupan sus condiciones de vida allí y me ha expresado su preocupación por que Victoria y yo quedemos solas, tanto que está considerando abandonar su caso y solicitar su deportación, aunque se enfrentaría a la muerte al regresar a Colombia, algo tan horrible que no quiero ni imaginarlo.

Estamos tratando de recaudar el dinero necesario para contratar a un abogado en Luisiana y solicitar al juez de inmigración una fianza para asegurar la liberación de Alberto. El costo de contratar a un nuevo abogado será de aproximadamente $2,000 a $3,000, solo para la audiencia de fianza. Si se concede la fianza, tendremos que reunir el dinero para pagarla y asegurar su liberación. Si se le niega la fianza, necesitaremos dinero para defender su caso desde la detención, con un costo de probablemente $5,000 o más. Y mientras tanto, hago todo lo posible por cuidar de nuestra recién nacida mientras aún me recupero físicamente del parto y no puedo volver al trabajo.
