Help My Brother, Matt Borst, Fight Cancer and Heal

Hi everyone, I’m Heather — Matt’s little sister.

I never thought I’d be writing something like this, but my brother Matt Borst really needs our help right now.

What’s Happening

On Saturday, October 4th, Matt was rushed from Idaho to the University of Utah Hospital after things took a serious turn with his health. Since then, he’s already undergone two major surgeries, and doctors are still fighting a severe infection that’s keeping him from starting cancer treatment.

During his last surgery, they took a biopsy — and what they’re seeing right now looks like it could be stage 4 rectal cancer that has spread to his lungs, or possibly stage 3 in both areas. We won’t know for sure until the biopsy results come back, but either way, it’s a devastating diagnosis.

Because of the infection, Matt will need several more surgeries just to get healthy enough to begin treatment. He’s weak, in pain, and facing an unbelievably hard road ahead — but if you know Matt, you know he’s a fighter.

Who Matt Is

Matt is so much more than what he’s going through.

He’s a dad to his amazing son, Soren Borst, who is his absolute world.

He’s a husband and stepdad, who loves his family with everything he’s got.

He’s a twin, a son, a brother, an uncle, and honestly the kindest friend you could ever meet.

Matt’s the guy who would give you the shirt off his back, the one who always shows up, always checks in, and somehow keeps everyone laughing — even now, from his hospital bed.

Why We’re Asking for Help

This all happened so fast, and the expenses have already become overwhelming. Between the emergency transport from Idaho, multiple surgeries, long hospital stays, medications, and lodging near the hospital, it’s more than one family can handle alone.

His loved ones are doing everything we can to stay close to him in Salt Lake City, but travel, food, gas, and missed work are adding up quickly.

Travel and lodging for family to stay near him

Medications, surgeries, and recovery care

Upcoming cancer treatments once doctors can begin

Daily expenses while the family focuses on supporting Matt
