Help Mariely’s Family in Bolivia: A Returned Missionary’s Call to Action
Dear Friends,
If you served your mission in Bolivia, you know the strength, humility, and faith of the Bolivian people. I’m reaching out today with a heartfelt plea on behalf of Mariely, someone very dear to me—a sister in Christ whose family I was privileged to know and serve during my mission nearly three decades ago.
A Sacred Connection
While serving in El Bajío, Santa Cruz, Elder Hemming and I had the blessing of teaching and baptizing Mariely’s entire family. Mariely was just a young girl at the time, full of promise and light. Her father, a man of great faith and love, became a beloved bishop in their ward. Not long after his release, he passed away—leaving a legacy of devotion that still lives on in his family.
Since that time, Mariely has served a faithful mission, married in the temple, and remained true to the covenants she made at baptism nearly 27 years ago. She is a woman of quiet strength and enduring testimony. And now—she needs our help.
Mariely’s Struggle
Mariely and her family are enduring intense hardship due to Bolivia’s worsening economic crisis. Jobs are unstable, prices for basic necessities have doubled, and a new law has triggered the urgent repayment of a debt she simply cannot meet on her modest wages.
She writes:
“There are days when there’s only enough for breakfast and lunch… when I see my children’s sad faces and hear their little cries of hunger, it depresses me. But I keep going. I tell them, ‘One day, we’ll have plenty and be satisfied.’ I continue to trust in my Heavenly Father.”
Despite returning to work after caring for her children for 14 years, earning only half a salary, and selling food on weekends, it's not enough. Her husband Benjamin’s income covers only the mortgage and utilities. Now they are being asked to repay a loan immediately to avoid legal trouble. But with your help, they can escape this crushing burden.
Why $4,000?
Mariely needs $4,000 to:
Pay off the loan in full by the end of May and prevent escalating interest or legal complications.
Restore stability and focus on raising and feeding her three young children.
Give Benjamin the opportunity to start a better career, providing lasting income.
Breathe again, with dignity and hope.
This isn’t charity—it’s a lifeline. And it’s a chance for us to be the answer to her prayers.
A Personal Appeal
Her family is my family in Christ. I’m passionate about helping them in their time of need.
Those of us who served missions know what it meant to be taken in by the people, to share meals and testimonies, and to witness pure faith in action. Mariely’s family gave me those gifts—and now, I have the chance to give back.
Mariely writes:
“I don’t remember the day I left the presence of my Savior. I only know that my family and I have been greatly tested, yet we remain still for we know He is God.”
Let us come together as returned missionaries, brothers and sisters in Christ, and friends of Bolivia. Let us show Mariely that the bonds of faith and service endure—that her family is not alone.
