Stand with Leigh M. Johnson Against Firing Tenured Faculty

As many of you know, our colleague and friend Dr. Leigh M. Johnson has been fired midcareer from a tenured position as an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Christian Brothers University in Memphis. She was denied due process, and has filed a workplace discrimination/wrongful termination claim. As the only terminated faculty member who refused to sign the severance agreement* (with its non-disclosure provision), she has had to deal with unacceptable administrative decisions complicating her departure from campus.**
Leigh is an extraordinary teacher and mentor of her students. Her university consistently rated her “Excellent” in her annual reviews, and her student evaluations reflected the judgment of her colleagues. Her classes were packed and popular, she was recognized as an innovative pedagogue, and she is widely known outside the university for her podcasting and other media. We want to help Leigh fund the legal bills that have already accumulated in her effort to fight the university's unwarranted and unacceptable termination, and that will accrue as she continues the fight.
We have known Leigh for twenty years: she was one of Mitchell’s students at Penn State while she completed her Ph.D. We enjoyed long conversations in the hall, uproarious conversations on the town, and the great music she made with her band. Leigh is an outstanding teacher-scholar in philosophy whose presence in the profession is in our eyes indispensable, and she has always been deeply committed to justice. We want to see Leigh get back to doing what she does so well. Join us!
