We are reaching out to support a young family facing an extraordinary challenge. Lexy and Devin are preparing to welcome their precious daughter, Layla Rose, who has been diagnosed with a severe Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), a rare and life-threatening condition.

CDH occurs when the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen, does not fully develop, leaving an opening that allows abdominal organs like the stomach, intestines, and liver to shift into the chest. This displacement stunts lung growth, resulting in severe breathing difficulties and other complications at birth.

At their 20-week ultrasound, Lexy and Devin received the devastating news of Layla’s diagnosis. The severity of her condition required them to relocate to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for a specialized procedure called Fetoscopic Endoluminal Tracheal Occlusion (FETO). This intricate surgery places a small balloon in Layla’s throat, just below her vocal cords, to promote lung growth and development. The balloon remains in place for five weeks and is removed at 34 weeks gestation.

Layla is showing incredible strength, responding well to the FETO procedure so far. However, her journey is far from over. After birth, she will require complex surgery to reposition her organs and repair her diaphragm. Despite her resilience, the emotional, mental, and financial toll on Lexy and Devin has been immense. Unable to work due to their relocation to Philadelphia for Layla’s specialized care at CHOP, they are navigating uncharted territory with courage and hope.
