March 2026 UPDATE:
The PDL1 marker has qualified him for Keytruda(immunotherapy only). He is currently receiving the treatment every 3 weeks and a new scan will be done in a few months to see if its helping or not. At a recent visit we were told that it is in his lungs and lymph nodes in his chest based off the last scan in January and they want to keep checking his entire body and his blood for any more spreads.
He is still working and is as active as possible. His health insurance premium is still extremely out of the box high for us so we are doing everything we can to afford it even though it comes directly out of my paycheck.
Early 2026:
Hey everyone, Larissa here. The end of 2025 threw us a monkey wrench. The 3 month scan in December showed growth in his lungs of some nodules they had been monitoring. A biopsy was performed on 12/12 and that confirmed it was the same cancer(squamous cell carcinoma). Due to this, the doctors informed us just before Christmas that the cancer had essentially spread and was no longer curable. We were informed we could do treatment but that is all. They wanted to do genetic testing on the nodules for PLD1 marker but there was not enough of a sample to successfully test so the oncologist ordered another biopsy.
Earlier this week, he had another full body scan and that indicated more nodules than before, more growth of the existing and additional ones in the lymph nodes in the chest and potentially other areas as well. We spoke with the oncologist a few days after the scan and the result of this phone call was GRIMM to say the least. If Larry opts for no treatment, he would likely be gone in about 6 months. If he opts for treatment(more chemo and possibly immunotherapy) he would have about 1-2 years to live . This is not the news we were expecting to hear.
We are hopeful he is still going to be able to continue to work with this new treatment but it could be harder on his body than last year especially with the treatment being stronger and just to put a bandaid on the cancer.
We are starting treatment this coming Monday, biopsy on Wednesday and then will find out in a few weeks about the genetic testing results.
We still need help in any way that is possible. We have a rough road ahead and the costs are much more than we can afford.
Any help would be extremely appreciated.
Love, Larissa and Larry
