Stand with Kat's Dad: Cancer & Financial Strain
Donation protected
I’m reaching out to share my dad’s ongoing battle with recurrent esophageal cancer. After undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and an esophagectomy in June 2023, his cancer returned shortly after. He’s been on palliative chemotherapy for the last 15 months, which has been successful in preventing further spread, but unfortunately, a cure isn’t likely.
My parents, both retired and on disability, rely on Medicare Advantage/UnitedHealthcare for health coverage. However, their plan doesn’t cover all expenses, and they are already burdened with thousands of dollars in debt to OHSU. To make matters worse, OHSU and UnitedHealthcare are in contract negotiations, and it’s looking like my dad’s oncologist will soon be out-of-network, potentially limiting his care options.
My parents have been together for 48 years—since they were teenagers—and their love for each other is truly inspiring. I want them to have the chance to enjoy their time together, to go on vacations, share nice dinners, and make memories without the constant worry of mounting medical bills. My dad has always put my mom and me first, and I want to do the same for him.
It breaks my heart to watch them struggle under this weight of financial stress and illness when they should be focusing on cherishing the moments they have left. Any support to help ease their financial burden would mean the world to us.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story. Your kindness and generosity are deeply appreciated.
