Kara’s Story
Kara Whitehead is a 56-year-old National Guard veteran who has faced immense challenges with extraordinary resilience. During her service, she was present for the LA riots following the Rodney King verdict, an experience that contributed to her PTSD. Over the past 30 years, she has given back to her community through active involvement in Shriners and veteran-linked motorcycle club charities.
In June 2015, Kara’s life was forever changed when another driver ran a stop sign and caused a devastating car accident. Kara sustained a brain bleed, a broken orbital, a broken nose, six broken ribs, a broken clavicle, and bone chips in her neck. Her recovery took six months, followed by two months of light duty. Despite these physical and emotional setbacks, Kara persevered and returned to work to support herself.
Now, Kara is facing her most difficult challenge yet: a diagnosis of breast cancer requiring multiple surgeries. The procedures and recovery process will prevent her from earning an income for approximately three months. On top of this, Kara battles significant anxiety related to her PTSD and the weight of her upcoming surgeries. She feels guilty about relying on the support of her brother (me) and our mother during this difficult time, though we are deeply honored to provide her the care she needs. If not now, please consider helping in the future.
