We’re ready to strike. But we need your help to do it.
Journalists from McClatchy Media newspapers across Idaho and Washington — including the Idaho Statesman, The (Tacoma) News Tribune, Tri-City Herald, The Olympian and Bellingham Herald — pledged to go on strike against our company.
Nobody expects to get rich in this line of work, but it should not be out of reach for us to save for retirement or have a child. A sudden car repair or an unforeseen medical bill should not be a crisis.
These experiences are why we are gearing up to walk out of our newsrooms. After nearly a year of bargaining, McClatchy Media and its hedge fund owners still refuse to offer us a wage floor above $52,000.
But we're also fighting for the future of local journalism. In order to have experienced eyes and ears in your community, you need journalists who can stick around and build a life instead of bouncing from job to job.
We have always sought to be a beacon for our communities. Every day, we hear from you, asking us to shine a light on your stories and investigate corruption in your town.
Now, it’s our turn to ask for your help. To go on strike, we need to find a way to keep making rent and paying bills. We’ll be relying on donations to show McClatchy that both our reporters and communities deserve better.
Let’s fight together for a sustainable future for local news.
