Help Us Support José De Jesús Ortega - Targeted for Defending Justice
On July 8, 2025, U.S. immigration officers targeted a landscaper in distress outside a surgical center in Ontario, California. Fearing for his safety, the man ran inside the Ontario Advanced Surgery Center. In the tense moments that followed, José De Jesús Ortega, a U.S. citizen and staff member, did what many of us would hope to do; he stepped in to protect a colleague, exercised his rights, and helped de-escalate the situation.
Video from the incident shows José and another staff member trying to shield a fellow human being from harm. Federal authorities are now accusing them of assaulting agents and interfering with an investigation, serious charges that José and his legal team are preparing to fight in court.
On July 25, ICE agents returned and detained José as he arrived at work.
We believe this was a clear act of retaliation, not a response to violence, but to the courage it took to intervene during a volatile and dangerous moment.
José has since been released under strict conditions and is working closely with legal counsel to navigate this complex and high-stakes federal case. He and his family are now carrying the emotional and financial toll of simply trying to do what was right.

José is a hardworking, humble, and deeply compassionate member of our community. He showed bravery in the face of injustice, and now he’s being punished for it.
